The Clouds Are Building Up

It is a cloudy day today. It has been raining all week with some amazing reports of rainfall in this area. But we do not mind it at all. We have been tortured by clouds building up before and then the storm just goes around us which is very annoying.

Have I started writing for the wrong column? Not at all. Just as there is a build of a clouds waiting for whenever that great triumph of rain will hit, so does the build up for the computing cloud ever increase and we sit wondering when it will burst and we will hit the holy grail of networked computing.

Every supplier of software, every supplier of hardware and everyone in between is watching out for this movement of taking your desktop from your computer to an internet server somewhere else. The distant dream of the 1980s is finally coming to fruition, but it is not quite there, just yet. We are getting close though. Between Google web-based applications, software suites such as eyeOS and a pull towards virtualisation occurring, the ever increasing climb indicates that it might be coming to an end soon.

Whether it is finding that killer application (more than likely) or an existing particular aspect of the cloud brings the crowds on a large scale to the offerings, we still have a way to go for the perfect cloud arrangement. But we are getting there, and as soon as super cheap and super fast networking becomes available to a majority of the users, and privacy concerns are sorted out, the clouds will probably burst open. But the rains are coming one way or another. Better get the umbrella, it's building up to be an interesting shower.
